The winter monitoring survey, carried out as part of BirdLife Cyprus's systematic illegal bird trapping monitoring programme, has now been completed. The overall picture for trapping activity for the year 2011 is one of an ecological disaster. The estimated bird death toll for 2011 has reached the shocking number of 2.8 million birds, exceeding that of 2010, which was up to now a record year for trapping. Sadly, 2011 has now set even higher record levels for our 10 year surveillance programme. Read more on our website www.birdlifecyprus.org

We often hear that bird trapping in Cyprus is a 'tradition'. In this video, you will see why this is not true. More than ten nets can be seen in this one field alone. Trappers are no longer afraid of prosecution in some areas, as they leave their nets in situ during daytime hours as well. This was filmed during BirdLife Cyprus' illegal bird trapping monitoring surveys. To find out more about why illegal bird trapping is so destructive, follow this link: http://www.birdlifecyprus.org/en/news-253-...
This radio spot is informing the general public that bird trapping may have been considered a tradition in the past but nowadays is contributing to an ecological disaster, killing hundreds of thousands of birds of different species every year, and is asking the listener to do a Christmas gift to nature and say NO to ambelopoulia. BirdLife Cyprus' dynamic campaign is aiming to have an impact on the general public; to make it realise the ecological disaster that bird trapping constitutes. For December (2012), the Christmas message 'Make a gift to nature, say NO to ambelopoulia' (only in Greek) will be playing on 2 radio stations in Cyprus, ANT1 (102.7 & 103.7FM) and ASTRA (92.8FM). The campaign is made possible thanks to the generous support of the RSPB (partner of BirdLife International in the UK).
